William H. Abbott

William H. “Red Ram” Abbott, 81, of Hanover, formerly of Spring Grove, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Manorcare Health Service- York North.

Born on Sunday, May 19, 1935 in Womelsdorf, PA, he was a son of the late Raymond and Elsie Bersch Abbott. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia L. Stewart Abbott, who died in 1996; two daughters, Debra J. Yost and Brenda K. Dickensheets; two grandsons, Mark S. and Matthew W. Yost; and four siblings.

A member of Bethel United Church of Christ in Spring Grove, William worked at as an electrician at United Defense, which was formerly known as BMY, until his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the Westminster Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #371 and enjoyed building and operating his own CB radios and stereos. William also sang in the church choir and played the organ.

Survivors include his beloved 20 year companion, Jean Luckenbaugh of York; four grandchildren, Jennifer L. Miller and her husband, Troy, of Spring Grove, Steven M. Yost II and his wife, Janel, of New Oxford, William R. Dickensheets and his girlfriend, Bobbi Miller, of Abbottstown; and Debra A. Dickensheets of Baltimore; nine great-grandchildren, Matthew S. and Mandi L. Miller of Spring Grove, Steven M. Yost III and Jenna L., Kora L., and Bria O. Yost of New Oxford, Alexis and Alica McWilliams of Baltimore, and one grandson Yost on the way; a brother, Russell Abbott of Tennessee; two son in-laws, Steven M. Yost of New Oxford and Ray L. Dickensheets of East Berlin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Panebaker Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover with The Rev. Robin S. Keating officiating. Inurnment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
