Willard D. Ziegler, Jr., 78, beloved husband of Helen L. Ziegler of Hanover, died Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Hanover Hospital following a brief illness.
Born November 18, 1932 in Hazleton, PA, he was a son of Willard D. Ziegler, Sr. and Elizabeth Culp Ziegler. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Hall and Betty Blacklidge; and a brother William Ziegler. He received his Bachelor of Science from Bloomsburg University and Master’s degrees from Penn State University and was a Doctoral candidate three credits shy of earning that degree.
Mr. Ziegler was Hanover School District’s first speech and hearing therapist and later worked in Harrisburg as a speech and hearing advisor for the state of Pennsylvania before retiring in 1994. He was a patriotic man who served as a corporal in the US Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post # 14. He was an avid swimmer and could be seen everyday at the YMCA. Recently becoming a 50 year Mason, he was a member of Patmos Lodge #348 F&AM. He was also a member of the Hanover Lions Club and marched with the Hanover Lancers, proudly carrying the United States flag.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 51 years, is a son, Eric P. Ziegler and his wife, Gail, of Rhode Island; a daughter, Lisa Ann Lucht and her husband, James, of North Carolina; one brother, James Ziegler; two sisters, Jacqueline Bogenreif and Addie Burnett all of California; four grandsons and one granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at All Saints Episcopal Church with The Rev. Douglas Smith officiating. Upon his wishes, his body was donated to the Humanity Gifts Registry of Pennsylvania.
