The funeral will be held at 11:00am on Thursday August 21, 2008 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, York Street, where he was a member. Burial will follow in Marburg Memorial Gardens with military rites by Hanover Allied Veteran Honor Guard.
Visitation: The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Walter Edward Alwine, 89, of Hanover, died unexpectedly on Monday, August 18, 2008 at Hanover Hospital. Born on January 1, 1919, he was a son of the late Edward R. and Cora Flickinger Alwine. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Charles H. Alwine, Niles Alwine, Randolph Alwine, Isaiah Hoke and John Hoke and a sister, Mary Ida Alwine.He served in the United States Army as a medic during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post No 14 and AARP 2812. He retired after 26 years of service with the York Division, Borg Werner, now known as York International. He was an avid golfer, having had three hole in ones at South Hills and naming his home course at Flat Bush.Survivors include his beloved wife, Garnet Black Alwine, with whom he would have celebrated 62 years of marriage on September 7; a daughter, Beverly Alwine, of Harrisburg; and four nieces, Donna Lutz, Dolores Colvin, Margaret Stell and Diane McFarland.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 127 York Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
