Verne M. Busler, Jr., MD, 86, of Hanover, husband of Betty Topper Busler, entered into God’s eternal care on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Spiritrust Lutheran-The Village at Utz Terrace following a lengthy illness.
Born on Monday, May 12, 1930 in York, he was the son of the late Vern M. Busler, Sr. and Esther Barnum Busler. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 57 years, Janet R. Busler, who died in 2007. He was a 1948 graduate of William Penn Sr. High School in York, where he was the editor of the school newspaper. He continued his education at Florida Southern University where he majored in pre-med and later became a 1963 graduate of the Temple University School of Medicine, earning his doctorate in medicine. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War and was later promoted to Commander in the Navy Reserves upon his completion of medical school.
Dr. Busler was a well known physician in the Hanover area for more than forty years before retiring in 2005. He will always be remembered for his gentle, caring nature and his dedication to his patients, of which he had more than 3500 at one time in his career. Additionally, he was very proud of the over 3000 infants that he delivered during his career. He held positions as a former York County Deputy Coroner and a former Medical Director for Hanover Hospital and Hanover Hall. He served on the founding board of directors for Lutheran Social Services at Utz Terrace. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (York Street), Patmos Lodge #348 F&AM, the Arcadian Social Club, Hanover Elks BPOE #763, Hanover Republican Club, and the Hanover Area Historical Society.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Michael Busler and his wife, Angela, of Inverness, FL, David V. Busler and his wife, Deborah, and Steven J. Busler all of York; nine grandchildren, John, Patrick, Katharine, Rachel, Michelle, Elizabeth, Paul, Marcy and Travis; 12 great-grandchildren; and four step-children and their families, Dennis Topper of Richmond, VA, Troy Topper of Alexandria, VA, Lori Toth of East Berlin and Kimberly Birgensmith of Hanover.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 am Saturday, October 8, 2016 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 127 York Street in Hanover with The Rev. E. Robert Burkhart officiating.
