Verna M. Payne, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 10, 2012, following a period of declining health, at her home with her loving family by her side.
Born February 16, 1921 in Beulahdean, NC, she was a daughter of the late George Washington Ledford and Louvenia Green Ledford. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James M. Payne; a daughter, Rosa Lee Slagle; a granddaughter, Verna Lee Payne; two brothers, Junior and Donald Ledford; and seven sisters, Pansy Roop, Pearl Honeycutt, Bernice Putnam, Bonnie Frye, Marie Ledford, Myrtle Hetrick and Ilo Ledford; and her companion of 35 years, Roland W. Fridinger.
Mrs. Payne was a dietician for many years at Hanover Hospital and was a retired employee of the Sterner Grocery Store. She loved buying and selling antiques, going to yard sales and collecting antique medicine bottles.
Survivors include two sons, Jay W. Payne of New Hampshire and Donald Payne of Florida; a daughter, Betty L. Wonder and her husband, John, of Hanover; a sister, Lois Schuchart of Hanover; 17 grandchildren, Alan, Gail and Alisha Payne, Jeff Klunk, Tim Klunk, Sr., Cheryl Toal, Jen Rigel, Bill Imler, Jr., Stacy Imler, Lisa Campisi, John, Craig and Neil Slagle, Donald J. Payne, Gina Jansen, Jessan Ingram and Sara King; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 1 pm Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover with The Rev. Scott A. Sager officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a viewing to be held 6-8:00pm Tuesday and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
