Thomas R. Oaster

Thomas R. Oaster, 87, of Hanover, died Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Hanover Hospital following a period of declining health. The following obituary of his life is in his own words.

“Hi, my name is Thomas Oaster and I was born in Hanover, PA on May 30, 1925, the son of the late George J. and Estella A. Scheivert Oaster. I attended St. Joseph Parochial School and was permitted to graduate mid-term from Delone Catholic High School in 1943 because I was entering the service.

I joined the U.S. Navy Seabees in January 1943 and spent two years in the South Pacific. I was assigned to the 6th Spec. Stevedore Battalion. We did duty on Bougainville, Gaudalcanal, Leyte Gulf in the Philippines and other islands in the Solomons. I received an honorable discharge in February 1946. When I came home, I worked in a small print shop and then at the Evening Sun for 29 years. I retired from SKF, USA, Inc.

I was the loving husband of W. Maria Oaster for over 40 years before she passed away December 2009. I was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. I was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and volunteered my time there. I was a member of the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post 14 of Hanover.

I am survived by daughters, Diane M. Greenwald of York and Deborah A. Torrey of FL, who are twins, Michelle L. Garrett of Hanover, Anna M. Crowl of Westminster, MD and Gabrielle L. Balthazor of Carlisle. I also have six wonderful grandchildren.

Well, gotta go, it’s June 28, 2012 and I just got a call from a Higher Authority who says my time on earth is up. Enjoy life, it’s the most precious gift God can give you and I will see you all sooner or later. God Bless, Tom”

The viewing will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm Sunday, July 1, 2012 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover. A brief prayer service will follow at 8 pm with The Rev. E. Edward Keyser officiating. A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military rites being rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
