Stewart E. Newman, 88, of Hanover, passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2019 surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on Saturday, October 31, 1931 in Union Mills, MD, he was a son of the late Noah E. and Hilda R. Henry Newman. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Ruth E. “Sis” Newman, who died in 2005; and two brothers, Earl H. Newman and Noah E. Newman, Jr.
In 1962, Stewart began his career in the service station industry when he owned and operated Newman’s Atlantic on Carlisle Street in Hanover, later moving to the location on the corner of Broadway and Fulton Street. Always known as a hard worker, Stewart remained active in various family businesses until retiring in July of 2019. He was a US Air Force veteran of the Korean War and was a member of St. Jacob’s (Stone) United Church of Christ, where he served on the church council for many years. He was a member of the AmVets Post #22, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2506, and was a life member of the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post #14. Stewart loved listening to music, dancing in his earlier days, and watching football, sprint car and NASCAR races.
Survivors include his son, Gary E. Newman and his wife, Angel; a grandson, Michael E. Newman and his wife, Shalena; a great-granddaughter, Nalaya Grace, all of Hanover; other extended family member, and many caring and loving friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on November 23, 2019 at the St. Jacob’s (Stone) United Church of Christ in Glenville with The Rev. Dr. Bruce P. Bouchard officiating. Burial will follow in Stone Church Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
