Steven A. “Smitty” “Sonny” Butler, 60, of Hanover, devoted husband of Debora Gross Butler, entered into God’s eternal care on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at his home following a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Born on November 13, 1952 in Hanover, he was a son of Ida May Teal Butler of Hanover and the late Evan Belmont Butler.
Upon graduating from Hanover High School in 1970, he went to work as a plumber for his father at Evan B. Butler, Inc., later being joined by his brother, Jeff. Following his father’s retirement, Steve and Jeff continued to run the family business and Steve remained active until his sudden illness. Nothing made him happier than his family and working with his dad and brother.
He was a member of St. Bartholomew’s United Church (ELCA) in Hanover. He was also a member of the Hanover Plumbing Association, the Abbottstown Fire Co., the McSherrystown Home Association, and a bowling league which he enjoyed very much. When he was younger, he played softball with the plumbers and later in the church league. A faithful Nighthawk supporter of his girls’ sports teams. He was also a loyal and avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. For more than 40 years, Steve helped with chicken barbeques that his church sponsored, and was known as one of the “Men of the Chicken.” He took many family fishing trips to Canada and the Chesapeake Bay. He enjoyed tending his vegetable garden and shared the fruits of his labor with many.
In addition to his wife of 39 years and his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Brandi M. Avery and Stephanie R. Giggard and her husband, Ken, all of Hanover; three adoring grandchildren, Sadira Stallings, Mikenna Avery and Brayden Giggard, who will miss their “Pap” forever. He is also survived by two sisters, Barbara Butler and Judy Kuhn and her husband, Kimothy, all of Hanover; a brother, Jeffrey Butler and his companion, Wendy Gardner of Abbottstown; eight sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
Through his illness, Steve received so much love, support and prayers from his church, family, friends, neighbors, community, all of the doctors and their staff, the VNA and Hospice and his classmates from the Class of 1970.
The funeral will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at St. Bartholomew’s United Church (ELCA) with The Rev. Steven Thomas officiating. The viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the church and the family will receive friends following the service.
