James Smith Hughes, III, “Smitty”, 54, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at his home following a hard fought, two year battle with cancer.
Born on Wednesday, December 30, 1959 in Gettysburg, he was a son of James Smith Hughes, Jr. of East Berlin and the late MaryAnn Miley Hughes. He was a former employee of Hanover Bronze and Aluminum before being employed by Penn-Mar Castings for 25 years.
Smitty was a member of Hanover AmVets Post # 22 and the Hanover Loyal Order of Moose Lodge # 227. He enjoyed NASCAR and sprint car racing, playing the guitar and was a diehard Raider’s fan. Socially connected to many in the area, he was known for his skill in throwing darts and shooting pool.
Survivors include two sons, Jamie Hughes of New Oxford and Christopher Hughes and his wife, Ashley, of Shiloh; a daughter, Adonna Hughes of Littlestown; four sisters, Deb Brodbeck and her husband, Mike, of East Berlin; Lynn Laughman and her husband, Jim of McSherrystown, , Becky Sweeney and her husband, Chip, of Hanover, and Crystal Marrow and her husband, Jeff, of Newville; a brother, Randy Hughes and his wife, April, of York Haven; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends during an informal time of sharing memories and stories of Smitty from 6 pm to 8 pm Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover.
