Russell T. Shaffer, 85, of Hanover, loving husband of Pat A. Shaffer, passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Hanover Hall Nursing Center with his family by his side.
Born on Thursday, August 6, 1931 in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Theodore T. and Elizabeth Carne Shaffer. Russ was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he had served on the vestry, as a senior warden, and taught Sunday school for several years. A four year veteran of the US Navy, he had served aboard the USS Oriskany during the Korean War, and later retired from the US Postal Service after 30 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Russ was an avid woodworker, making many items of furniture for family.
In addition to his wife with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on June 1st of this year, survivors include three daughters, Wanda L. Shaffer and her husband, Philip Strickhouser, Jolene N. Shaffer and her spouse, Dawn Gartrell, Kathleen A. Shaffer and her fiancé, Terry Markle, all of Hanover; two sons, Russell D. Shaffer and his companion, Sharon Smith of York Springs, and Tyler J. Shaffer and his wife, Melissa, of Hanover; a daughter-in-law, Shari Shaffer of East Berlin; and three grandchildren, Logan D. Shaffer of East Berlin, Spenser R. Shaffer of Pittsburgh, J.T. Fuller and his fiancée, Courtney Hanson, of McSherrystown. He was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Thompson.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Monday, April 24, 2017 at the All Saints Episcopal Church with The Rev. Douglas C. Smith and The Rev. Fred Stevenson officiating. Burial will follow in the church memorial garden. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
