Rodney T. Ernst, 87, of Hanover, husband of Doris Asper Ernst, entered into God’s eternal care while surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 21, 2010 at Cross Keys Village—The Brethren Home Community following a period of declining health.
Born on March 13, 1923 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Paul and Irene Brendel Ernst. In 1941, he graduated from Eichelberger High School and later served during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps, earning the rank of Corporal. He owned and operated a successful plumbing and heating business in York and Adams Counties for over thirty years.
He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and the Hanover VFW Post 2506. He enjoyed hunting and golfing and playing Bingo.
In addition to his wife of 67 years, he is survived by two sons, Michael Ernst and his wife, Deb of Toledo, Ohio and R. Scott Ernst and his wife, Connie of McSherrystown; two daughters, Sandra Kreider and her husband, David of Lititz and Pamela Shipley of Hanover; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Neal Ernst.
The funeral will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover with The Rev. Jack Hoffman officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Gettysburg with military graveside rites being conducted by the Honor Guard of the Adams County Allied Veterans Council. Serving as pallbearers will be his five grandsons, Michael James Ernst, II, David Lee Ernst, Eric Scott Ernst, Chase David Kreider and Stephen Sheridan Shipley. The family will receive friends at a viewing held from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at the funeral home.
