Robert E. "Bob" Smith Sr.

Robert E. “Bob” Smith, Sr., 80, of Hanover, husband of Carol Lee Whitfield Smith, entered into God’s eternal care on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at his home.

Born on Monday, March 23, 1942 in Luke, MD, he was a son of the late William Henry Smith, Jr. and Lillian Laverne Evans Smith. A 1960 graduate of Bruce High School in Westernport, MD, he proudly served his country in the US Army, in Germany, during the Cold War. Bob was employed by the former West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. He later became President of Local 676 United Paperworkers International Union and then worked for the former United Paperworkers International Union as an international representative. Following, he became Vice President of Pace International Union and retired as Vice President and Area Director for the United Steelworkers Union.

Bob was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Midlothian, VA and after moving to Hanover, was active in many activities at Homewood at Plum Creek. He collected die cast model cars and enjoyed assembling wooden model cars. A lover of being outdoors, he enjoyed camping and spending time at Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, MD, but enjoyed time spent with his family the most.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, survivors include a daughter, Wendy Lee Smith-Chin and her husband, Alan, of Catonsville, MD; a son, Robert Eugene Smith, Jr. and his wife, Melissa, of East Stroudsburg, PA; grandchildren, Tiffany and Matthew Chin, Colby, Luke and Cheyenne Smith, and Andie and Allie Gambrel; a brother, William David Smith; two sisters, Faye Amber Kuhlman and Yvonne Suzanne Dunnivan; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 10, 2022 at the Homewood Chapel at Plum Creek, 425 Westminster Avenue in Hanover. The family will receive friends in the chapel one hour prior to the service.
