Robert J. Smith, 92, of Hanover, loving husband of Bernice A. Wareheim Smith, entered into God’s eternal care on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Homewood at Plum Creek.



Born on Wednesday, January 18, 1922 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Leo A. and Regina Klunk Smith. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II having served in the European Theater. During the war, he crossed the English Channel 57 times aboard the LST 212, and participated in the first wave to hit the beach on D-Day during the Normandy invasion.



Mr. Smith founded R.J. Smith Decorators in 1950 and operated it for 42 years retiring in 1992. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, was active with the Holy Name Society and served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Hanover Elks BPOE Lodge # 763, the National Chapter of AARP, and was a lifetime member of the Exchange Club of Hanover .



In addition to his wife of 71 years, survivors include four daughters, Joan L. Reese and her husband, Michael, of Baltimore, MD, Carole A. Ahrens and her husband, Edward, of Glenville, Rebecca J. Cole and her husband, Dennis, and Margaret J. Warner and her husband, Macklyn, all of Hanover; 12 grandchildren, Douglas, Jeffrey, Laura and Brian Reese, Allison Kleinfelter, Emily McSparin, Andrea, Adam and Mitchell Cole, Kevin and Kristi Warner, and Kelly Kulp; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Catherine S. Arigo, F. Raphael Smith, John A. Smith, Maurice E. Smith, Marie and Helen Smith, Dorothy E. Long and M. Regina Keefer.



A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church celebrated by The Rev. Msgr. James M. Lyons and concelebrated by The Rev. Joseph F. Gotwalt. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.



The family will receive friends at a viewing from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at St. Joseph Church. A service of remembrance by the Exchange Club of Hanover will take place at 8 pm followed by a prayer vigil service. A second viewing will be held from 10 to 11 am Wednesday at the church.



In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5055 Grandview Road, Hanover, PA 17331.
