Services: A funeral service to celebrate Mr. Howe's life will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday morning at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church, 1398 Moulstown Rd., Hanover.
Visitation: Viewings will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover and Thursday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church.
Robert W. Howe, 82, of East Berlin entered into God's eternal care 6:55 A.M. Monday morning, March 12, 2007 at Hanover Hospital. He was the husband of Evelyn McMaster Howe and the late Ruth Ann Brown who died in 1974. Born in Hanover on May 21, 1924, he was the son of the late Joseph and Alta Snyder Howe. As young man, Mr. Howe made the decision to leave high school and begin a career as a machinist for Elsner Engineering. It was shortly thereafter, that he received the call to serve his country during World War II and so on April 27, 1943, he was inducted into the Army. Following six months of basic training, Tech Sergeant Howe was assigned to the 24th Divisioin, 34th Battalion, Co. E. and set sail for the South Pacific. Upon arrival, he was immediatley engaged in combat and he fought with honor, courage, and valor in the battles and campaigns for New Guinea and the Southern Philippines. For his bravery, Tech Sergeant Howe was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars, Distinguished Unit Badge with one bronze oak leaf cluster, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars and one bronze arrowhead. At the time of his death, Tech Sergeant Howe was the last surviving soldier from his company. Upon his return to Hanover, Mr. Howe continued his career at Elsner Engineering for 25 years before accepting a position at the Hanover Evening Sun, where he retired after 19 years of service in 1987 as a Computer Technician. He was a faithful member of Mount Carmel Lutheran Church. Mr. Howe was also a member of the Buchanan Valley Rod & Gun Club, Hanover American Legion, Hanover Amvets, and was a life member of the East Berlin Veterans of Foreign Wars, Porters Fire Co., and the East Berlin Fish and Game. As an outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and fish. He was also a skilled archer and for two years in the mid 1950's, Mr. Howe was the PA state archery champion. He will be sadly missed by his family; Candee Waite and husband Stanley of Littlestown, Cindy Sheffer and husband Fred of Spring Grove, Sonya Tranum and husband Charlie of Orrtanna, Bobbie Ann Bumbaugh and husband Dennis of Greencastle, Joseph Howe and fiance Cheryl Clabaugh of Biglerville, Randy Howe and wife Rae of Hanover, 3 Stepchildren, Stacey Yost and husband Jerry, Spring Mackie and husband Dennis, Rick Reichart and wife Dawn all of Abbottstown, 19 Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren, 2 step sisters, and cousins. Mr. Howe was also preceded in death by a son Jamie Howe and a daughter Susan Howe. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday morning at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church, 1398 Moulstown Rd., Hanover. Viewings will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover and Thursday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery with military honors by the Allied Veterans Honor Guard. The Rev. Dr. William H. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons Jeremiah Reichert, Eric Yost, Joseph Lynn Howe, Ronnie Jones, Troy Martin, Sean Schuman, and Nathan Howe.
