Robert Kirk Heffernan
Robert Kirk Heffernan, 72, of New Oxford, entered into God’s eternal care on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Crosskeys Village- The Brethren Home Community.
Born on December 18, 1951 in Bethesda, MD, he was a son of the late William F. and Doris Mae Cox Heffernan. He was also preceded in death by his wife, P. Kathleen Heffernan; and his sister, Jo Ann Heffernan. A 1969 Graduate of Wheaton High School in MD, he earned his associates degree from Montgomery College. Following college, he enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserves. He spent over 25 years as a police officer for the Waynesboro Police Department and retired in 2006. Following retirement, he and Kathy moved to New Oxford to be closer to family.
In 1995, he was awarded Office of the Year for his work and dedication to the community following the 1994 plane crash that happened in Waynesboro. He was a marksman and won awards at Sharpshooter Competitions. He was a devoted member of Christ United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, where he served with the Stephens Ministry.
He enjoyed music, listening as wells playing several instruments, reading, and loved a trip to Gettysburg.
He is survived by his son, Kenneth R. Heffernan and his wife, Donna, of Summerdale; daughter, Kelly Harbaugh and her husband, Lowell Harbaugh, Jr.; two grandchildren, Brayden and Paisley Harbaugh; and loving in laws, nieces, and nephews.
Services will be held privately.
