Richard E. “Dick” Becker, 80, of Hanover, husband of Marian Zentz Becker, went Home on Saturday, December 24, 2011 from his residence following a period of declining health.



Born on June 29, 1931 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Richard E. Becker, Sr. and Lettie Bowman Becker. He earned his high school diploma at the age of 14 and later enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS Botetourt during the Korean War. Following the war, he was employed in maintenance and grounds keeping by St. Francis' Preparatory School under the direction of Father Ronald Bodenshatz. He later served as a foreman for American Chain and Cable Co, from which he retired in 1993.



A member of Calvary Bible Church when it was on Flickinger Road, he enjoyed fishing, landscaping and making water gardens. He also was a skilled woodworker and built a home with his sons on Hilltop Drive, likened to The Gates House on Market Street in York. He will be remembered for his pleasant personality and devilish charm.



In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Jeffery Becker of Gettysburg, Joseph Becker and his wife, Vicki, and Jonathan Becker, all of Spring Grove; two daughters, Suzanne Sterner and her husband, John of Abbottstown, and Stephanie “Steff” Mummert and her husband, Ronald of Pine Haven, WY; eight grandchildren: Jesse, Sara, Jared, Brianne, Addie, Isaiah, Moriah, and Brittany; three great grandchildren: James, Lindsay and Devin; four sisters, Helen Neal of Spring Grove, Pat Martin, Gloria Brown and Judy Snyder, all of Hanover; a brother, John Becker of Spring Grove, and many nieces and nephews.



The funeral will be held at 11 am Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover with The Rev. Dr. Chet V. Joines and The Rev. W. Tyler Mummert officiating. The family will receive friends at the viewing one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow immediately after, at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, 250 Chestnut Hill Rd, York with military graveside rites being conducted by the York County Veteran Honor Guard.
