Ray E. Swartz

Ray E. Swartz, 81, of Hanover, husband of Fay Snoke Swartz, entered into God’s eternal care on Friday, November 7, 2014 at Cross Keys Village – The Brethren Home Community while surrounded by his family.



Born Thursday, September 14, 1933 in Newville, he was a son of the late Earl E. and Stella Moffitt Swartz. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Swartz; two sisters, Sara Swartz and Aileen McCullough; and a son-in-law, Alan Despines. He proudly served with the U.S. Air Force Special Forces, as an Airman First Class, from 1952-1956 during both the Korean War and Cold War era. Following his military service, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Shippensburg College in 1961. He later received a Masters degree from Shippensburg and a Masters of Arts degree in Religion from the Evangelical School of Theology in Myerstown.



Mr. Swartz was a Social Studies teacher at South Western High School for 26 years. Additional careers in his lifetime included; employment by Knouse Foods, municipal police officer in West Manheim and Manheim Townships, independent electrical contractor and former real estate agent. He was an active member of the Hanover Church of the Brethren, where he did domestic and international mission work. Ray enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a devoted family man and took great pleasure in going to his children and grandchildren’s activities.



Surviving, in addition to his wife of 57 years, are four children, Amy L. Despines of Hanover, Kay Swartz Rentzel and her husband, Jeffrey, of Dillsburg, Sue E. Walker and her husband, Ed, of Shippensburg, and Ray E. Swartz, II and his wife, Rosie, of Spring Grove; a sister, Loree Swartz of Carlisle; ten grandchildren, Alison and Alex Despines; Andrew and Evie Rentzel; Emily Dundas and her husband, Ryan; Elliot Walker and his wife, Mallery; Ethan Walker; and Kali, Kari and Jake Swartz; three step-grandchildren, Molly Craig and her husband, Thom; Bryan Lippy and his wife, Jordan; and Nate Lippy; and three great-grandchildren.



A memorial service will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at the Hanover Church of the Brethren, 601 Wilson Avenue, Hanover, with The Rev. Geraldine Godfrey officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1:30 pm Tuesday at the church.



In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Hospice of Hanover and Spring Grove, 440 N. Madison Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
