Services: A service to celebrate and remember his life will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 West Chestnut St., Hanover. The Rev. Dr. Daniel M. Yeiser will officiate.
Visitation: Viewings will be Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover and Monday morning in the church parlor from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M.
Paul L. Shearer, 90, of Hanover entered into God's eternal care 6:50 P.M. Wednesday evening, April 11, 2007 at his home. He was the loving husband of the late Vesta Walter Shearer who died June 27, 2003. Born in Hanover on August 13, 1916, he was the son of the late Elmer and Helen Witter Shearer. Following graduation from Eichelberger High School with the class of 1936, Paul was offered employment at the Eisenhart Wallcovering Company. In 1941, Paul married Vesta and continued working at Eisenhart's until 1943 when he received the call to serve his country during World War II. Paul joined the Navy and was trained to be a Corpsman, a military occupation that would guide him throughout his life. Following his return to Hanover in 1946, Paul continued his employment as a Craftsman at Eisenhart's until his retirement in the mid 1970's after 42 years of loyal service. During his lifetime, Paul supported the community he loved in many ways, for 50 years, he was involved with the Boy Scouts and for 22 of those years as a Scout Master, for 42 years he taught Advanced First Aid for the Red Cross, was a 52 year member of Hanover Fire Company #1, serving as Chief from 1969 to1974 and as a member of the Emergency Rescue Squad for many years. So well thought of in Hanover, Paul was asked to serve on Borough Council in 1989. He did so for 14 years, and during that time, held the office of President, Vice President and was a member of the Recreation Endowment Committee. He was a faithful member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and the Hanover Elks where he was named Elk of the year in 1986. Paul also found time to enjoy golf and make jewelry from rocks and minerals during his retirement. He led a busy and fulfilling life and through it all still found the time to be a great husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be sadly missed by his daughters Elizabeth Cramer and husband Fred of York, Susan Sponseller and husband Rodney, Patricia Streight and husband Mike, Carol Smith and husband Mark, a son Joseph Shearer and wife Donna all of Hanover, 16 grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery will military honors by the Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
