Neil Fralick Smith, 95, of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at UPMC Hanover.
Born on Friday, September 23, 1927 in Cleveland, OH, he was a son of the late Edward and Mary Fralick Smith. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 65 years, Helen L. Johnson Smith, who died June 3, 2023; four siblings, Mary Fleming, Janet McDonald, Edward Smith, and Dorothy Leslie; and his twin sister, Virginia Smith. Neil was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp and was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church. He was a participant in the Hanover Area Bicentennial, and was an Extraordinary Minister and on the Parish Council at St. Vincent de Paul Church. Neil had past employment at Art Metal in Jamestown, NY, Emeco Industries, Design Center, Reliance Medical Products, and Dentsply. He was a graduate of St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland and Cleveland Institute of Art. Neil was a member of the Keystone Region Chapter of Studebaker Drivers Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Hanover Jaycees, and the Industrial Designers Society of America. He served on the Hanover Borough Department of Health from 1972-2013, served as a Hanover Borough Councilman from 1968-1971, and served on the school board at Delone Catholic High School.
Survivors include five children, Patricia Berwager and her husband, Barry, Margaret Severns and her husband, Shawn, Susan Schultz and her husband, Brett, Neil Smith, Jr. and his wife, Laura, and Michael Smith and his wife, Andrea; eleven grandchildren, Nick Groft, Molly Berwager, Alex Berwager and his wife, Katie, Jason Zepp and his wife, Rachael, Jeremy Zepp and his wife, Laura, Ashton Severns and his wife, Brittany, Gavan Schultz, Mari Monroy-Smith and her spouse, Kit, Ruby Smith, Ben Smith, and Penny Smith; and five great grandchildren, Keegan, Kohan, Lana, Dylan, and Mia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 23, 2023 at 11 am at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 220 Third Street in Hanover by The Rev. Joseph F. Gotwalt officiating. A viewing will take place on Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 6-8 pm at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover and at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in St. Vincent’s Cemetery.
