Services: A funeral mass to celebrate and remember his life will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday morning at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, 220 Third St., Hanover, PA.
Visitation: Viewing will be Thursday evening 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover, PA with recitation of the rosary at 8:00 p.m.
Michael J. Bennett, 81, of Hanover entered into God's eternal care 2:33 p.m. Monday, September 3, 2007 at his home. He was the husband of Evelyn Todt Bennett to whom he was married over 44 years. One of 15 children, he was born in Hanover on October 2, 1915 and was the son of the late John and Adelaide (Noel) Bennett. In 1943, at the age of 18, Michael left Delone Catholic High School to serve his country during World War II. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and as a Corporal on a mortar crew fought with pride, honor and valor in the battles for Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. The Benentt's are a patriotic family, and Michael was one of nine sons to serve in the the Armed Forces as well as his sister Dorothy. During World War II, eight of the sons and Dorothy served on active duty. Following the war, Michael returned to Hanover and graduated from Delone Catholic Catholic High School with the class of 1947. He then attended St. Francis College, Loretta, PA where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1951. Following college, he was employed as a Chemist at P.H. Gladfelter. He later accepted a position as a Chemist with Miller Chemical in Hanover until retiring in 1987 after 25 years of service. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons William Bennett and wife Susan of Severn, MD, Jerome Bennett of Abingdon, MD, 3 daughters Louise Gatton and husband Lawrence of Columbus, NJ, Lorraine Campbell of Woodbridge, VA, Joanne Smith and husband Kevin of Hanover, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 5 sisters Helen Smith, Patricia Zdankowski, Dorothy Boyer, Ethel Resh, and Sister Adelaide Bennett, S.S.J. He was preceded in death by 8 brothers William, Richard, John, Francis, Joseph, Thomas, Robert, Fred, and a sister Sister Frances Celine, S.S.J. A funeral mass to celebrate and remember his life will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday morning at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, 220 Third St., Hanover, PA. Viewing will be Thursday evening 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover, PA with recitation of the rosary at 8:00 p.m. The Rev. John A. Szada. Jr. will serve as Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Vincent Cemetery with military honors by the Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, 440 N. Madison St., Hanover, PA 17331.
