Services:
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Thursday, February 5, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church by his nephew, The Rev. Joseph F. Gotwalt. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with military rites being conducted by Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be his nephews, Earl Hertz, Jr., Joseph Hertz, John Herta, Robert Gotwalt, Michael Murren, Edward Leonard and Raymond Hertz, Jr.
Visitation:
The viewing will be held from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover with the Christian Wake Service being held at 8 pm, led by Father Gotwalt.

Merle J. Hertz, 80, of Hanover, died peacefully surrounded by his family, Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Hanover Hospital.Born on July 28, 1928 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Joseph H. and Cora M. Scheivert Hertz. He was also preceded in death by four siblings, Roger Hertz, Kathleen Hertz Gotwalt, Roger Hertz and Louise Hertz Heare. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion Post 14, the VFW Post 2506 and the AmVets Post 22. He served his community through the Hanover Fire Company and the York County Firefighters Association and was active with the McSherrystown Home Association, the Republican Club, the LEO Moose #227 and the Hanover Eagles#1407. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus #871. He had worked at his parents’ businesses, the Hertz Family Hatchery and Bottling Works of Hanover. He later worked at RH Sheppard, Revona Spinning Mill and Buchron Tool and Die before his retirement.Survivors include his twin brother, Earl Hertz, of Hanover, his caregivers who are his niece and nephew, Kathleen and Michael Murren of McSherrystown and many other nieces and nephews.
