Mary Jane Staub

Mary Jane Staub, 89, of McSherrystown, entered into God’s eternal care on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Cross Keys Village-The Brethren Home Community.

Born on January 28, 1925 in Washington DC, she was a daughter of the late William E. and Alice V. Shekell and wife of the late Francis “Fritz” Staub, who died in 1973. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack E. Shekell. A 1942 graduate of St. Paul’s Academy in Washington DC, she was a 60 year member of St. Joseph Catholic Church before most recently becoming a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church after she relocated from Hanover to McSherrystown.

An honest woman, who placed others’ needs before her own, Mary Jane deeply loved her family, her friends and God. Raising seven children by herself, she was an involved mother whose strong work ethic and humor helped to shape her family’s core. Her time with her family brought her the most joy, whether it was in preparation for Christmas or a cookout in the backyard. In addition to her legacy of love, she will be remembered for her cravings of M&M’s and her dedicated card sending.

She is survived by her seven children, William F. Staub and his wife, Patricia, James M. Staub and his wife, Sally, all of The Villages, FL, Edward P. Staub and his wife, Elizabeth of York, Nancy M. Brooks and her husband, Barry of Myrtle Beach, SC, John P. Staub and his wife, Fay, of Bishopville, MD, Joseph R. Staub and his wife, Erin of Reading, and Sharon R. Tharp and her partner, Matthew Balotin of Hanover; 18 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12 pm Monday, November 10, 2014 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 220 Third Street, Hanover with The Rev. John D. Schmalhofer serving as celebrant. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with her grandsons Carl Metzler, John, Christopher and Nicholas Staub, SSgt. Zachary Tharp and PFC Shane Tharp and Jacob Kaufman serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at a viewing from 6 pm to 8 pm Sunday evening at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover with the Rosary being recited at 8 pm. There will be another viewing one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Cecilian Village, 96 Academy Street, McSherrystown, PA 17344 or to VNA Hospice of Hanover and Spring Grove, 440 N. Madison Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
