Mary Anne Buffington Narkates, of Hanover, wife of Howard E. Narkates, died Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at Homewood at Plum Creek.

Born on Friday, May 17, 1929 in Atlanta, GA, she was a daughter of the late Edward B. and Virginia M. Buffington. She was a direct descendent of Richard Buffington who came to America from Yorkshire, England in 1675. He and his wife, Anne, purchased land from William Penn in what is now known as Chester County, PA. She was also a direct descendant of John King, a Revolutionary soldier from South Carolina.

Mary Anne was a former member of Digges’ Choice Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists of Hanover and the Col. Richard McCalister Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hanover and attended Homewood Chapel at Plum Creek.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 68 years, is a daughter, Deborah L. Russell and her husband, Terry, of Boise, ID; three grandchildren, Jesse Russell and his wife, Lynn Bielski, of Gaithersburg, MD, Aaron Russell and his wife, Kelli, of Lafayette, IN, and Lindsay Russell of Indianapolis, IN; and a great-grandson, Michael of Gaithersburg. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael D. Narkates, who died in 2008.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am Monday, April 13, 2015 at Homewood Chapel at Plum Creek with Chaplain Austin Chinault, II officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Homewood at Plum Creek Benevolence Fund, 425 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, PA 17331.
