Mary A. David, age 86, passed away at home on December 10, 2020, at about 11AM from Alzheimer’s disease and COVID-19 complications. Mary was born in 1934 in New York City to Angelina Mendogni Vignola and Joseph Vignola. She was the oldest of five children, with siblings: Paul (deceased, Harwood, MD), Catherine (deceased, Washington, D.C.), Evelyna (Haines, AK) and Francesca (Parma, Italy). In 1941, the family moved to Washington, D.C., where Mary graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1952 and Dunbarton College of the Holy Cross in 1957. She spent a year at the Dominican Convent in Sinsinawa, WI.
Mary married John M. David in June 1960. They shared over 60 years of marriage. They have six children: Joseph (wife Kathy), Philip (wife Andrea), Lydia Fazio (husband Peter), Stephen, Peter and James; 13 grandchildren: Morgan Feather, Matthew David, Collin David, Jazper Fazio, Haley David, Rafferty Fazio, Brian David, Stirling Fazio, Joshua David, Michelle David, Cara David, Santina Fazio and Sean David; one great-granddaughter: Penny Feather; seven nieces and nephews: Rosemarie Holm, Annmarie Vignola, Teresa Alton, Paul Vignola Jr., Pablo Manga, Michio Manga, and Natasha Belli; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mary taught elementary school at Silver Spring Intermediate (Silver Spring, MD) from 1957 to 1962, and at Saint Joseph’s Catholic School (Beltsville, MD) from 1975 to 1994. She and John raised their children in Calverton, MD, where she made many close and lasting friendships. Following retirement, she and John moved to their current address in Spring Grove, PA, in 1994.
Mary was always on the go, helping her aging parents, raising her children and enjoying her grandchildren. She was an accomplished seamstress, dress-maker and gardener. She often said, “I do children and flowers, not animals or vegetables.” She and John traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe with occasional visits to Canada and Australia. As the family live within commuting distance, they have remained very close through the years, enjoying the frequent dinners and celebrations that Mary hosted.
Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 536 South High Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
