Marshall Thomas Smith, 98, of York, passed away Monday, May 15, 2017, at Brunswick at Longstown in York.

A native of West Union, SC, he was born to Ulysses T. and Ollie Jane Abbott Smith on September 27, 1918. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen Nora Wike Smith; his second wife, Ruth Butts Tomlin Phillips Smith; three brothers, Abbott Jefferson Smith, Donald James Smith and Kermit David Smith; and a sister, Elaine Nina Smith Ardourel.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and, in 1976, retired from his concurrent civilian occupation at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland where he was a Mechanical Engineer. He was a life member of the V.F.W, the Retired Officers Association and Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Walhalla, SC.

Survivors include his sons: Dr. Thomas David Smith and his wife, Anna, of York, and Rodney Wike Smith and his wife, Mary Katherine of Elliston, VA; step-daughters: Paula Ridley and her husband, John, and Barbara Rogers and her husband, John, of TX; brother: Charles Edward Smith of Richmond, VA; sister: Betty Ann Smith Moore of Seattle, WA; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, May 22, 2017, at Davenport Funeral Home Chapel, 311 S. Highway 11, West Union, SC with burial to follow at Westview Cemetery in Walhalla. The family will receive friends at a viewing to be held one hour prior to the service at the Davenport Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, 256 Oconee Station Road, Walhalla, SC 29691.
