Margaret Virginia Beard, 88, formerly of Hanover, died on Thursday, November 10th at Beth Sholom nursing home.
Born on November 9, 1923 in Meyersdale, PA, she was the daughter of the late George and Mae Collins and wife of the late Diller Lee Beard, who died in 1988. She was also preceded in death by her sister Mary Susan Larson and her two brothers George and Bill Collins.
She is survived by her daughter, Gretchen B. Sweat and her husband, The Rev. Thomas Sweat of Richmond, VA; and two granddaughters, Blake Overby and Megan Lopes.
She was a graduate of Eastern High School in Baltimore, MD. While living in Hanover, she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and served with the United Methodist Women. She was also very involved with the creation of the Hanover Community Players in the early 1950s. During this time, Margaret was instrumental in bringing live theatre to the local elementary schools.
Margaret had a passion for cooking and shared her talent with so many people through the years. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and although she will be dearly missed, the legacy of her love, sense of humor and laughter will live on with those who love her.
The funeral will be held on Monday, November 14 at 12 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas Jacobs and Rev. Thomas Sweat officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church parlor; a reception will be held immediately following the service. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
