Lloyd E. Topper

Lloyd E. Topper, 80, husband of Betty V. Topper of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care Monday, March 28, 2011 at Hanover Hall following a period of declining health.

Born November 20, 1930 in Gettysburg, he was a son of the late Walter James and Lola Blubaugh Topper. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Merrill and Clyde Topper. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and served with the US Navy during the Korean War aboard the destroyer USS Johnston. Later in his life, he would support his comrades by attending Korean War Veteran trips and cruises.

Mr. Topper was a former employee at the Letterkenny Army Depot and retired after 35 years of service from Sears, Roebuck and Company. He started there as a mechanic, which led to auto supply sales which eventually promoted him to "big ticket" appliances. Known as a strong man, he enjoyed lifting barbells and was an avid hunter, even though he raised rabbits, pigeons and chickens on the side. He also had a passion for gardening and for business, which led him to an interest in an ice cream franchise and in Amway. Dedicated to his family, he enjoyed vacationing with them to Canada, California and Buckroe Beach on camping trips in a Chevy station wagon.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 51 years, are two daughters, Lori Topper and Kimberly Birgensmith and her husband, Thomas, all of Hanover; two sons, Troy Topper and his wife, Dawn, of Alexandria, VA and Dennis Topper and his wife, Irma, of Richmond, VA; three sisters, Anna Hoke of Hanover, Betty Anderson and her husband, Aaron, of York, and Judy Williams of York; two brothers, Roy Topper and his wife, Gay, of Upper Marlboro, MD and Robert Topper and his wife, Karen, of Hanover; eight grandchildren, Jared Topper, Kelsey, Tyler, Katlyn, Kiley, and Teryn Birgensmith, and Dylan and Payton Caler; one step-granddaughter, Adrian Shell; two great-grandchildren, Miranda Topper and Coledan Shell; and two sisters-in-law, Curvey Topper of Chambersburg and Eloise Topper of Gettysburg.

The funeral will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church, 55 Albright Drive, Hanover with The Rev. Richard D. Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be Dennis, Troy and Jared Topper, Dylan and Payton Caler and Tyler and Teryn Birgensmith. The family will receive friends at a viewing to be held 6-8:00 PM Friday at the Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover.
