Leo T. Groft

Leo T. Groft, 84, of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at his home.



Born Monday, August 11, 1930 in McSherrystown, he was a son of the late Albert and Regina Pullman Groft. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Jean Marie Reck Groft, who died in 1980; a grandson, Jonathan Lee Groft; three sisters, Cass Stambaugh, Doris Jones and Rita Herrell; and three brothers, Paul, Herbert and Frank Groft. He was a 1948 graduate of Delone Catholic High School and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.



Mr. Groft was a retired employee of the former Penland Paper, now Sonoco Products. Following his retirement, he worked part-time for Pressell’s Florist. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. Skilled with his hands, he enjoyed and woodworking. He also loved playing slot machines and scratch off cards.



Survivors include five children, Thomas L. Groft and his fiancée, Marilyn Bowman, James Groft and his wife, Karen, all of Hanover, David Groft and his husband, Barry, of Harrisburg, Michael Groft and his wife, Jeannie, of Spring Grove, and Melissa Hufnagle of Hanover; two sisters, Eva Gephart of McSherrystown and Jeannie Orndorff of Baltimore, MD; two brothers, Carroll Groft and his wife, Lorna, of McSherrystown and Donnie Groft and his wife, Gloria, of New Oxford; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.



A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am Thursday, October 30, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover celebrated by The Rev. Msgr. James M. Lyons. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be the grandchildren, Jason, Mike, Matt and Cortney Groft, Nick and Adam Hufnagle, Ashley Wilson, Brittney Rabenstine and Katie Sipling.



The family will receive friends at a viewing to be held 6 to 8 pm Wednesday at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover and at the church one hour prior to the service.



In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA Hospice of Hanover and Spring Grove, 440 N. Madison Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
