Laverne G. “Cleo” Bortner, of Spring Grove, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 11, 2024 at Homewood at Plum Creek.
Born on June 9, 1935 in Codorus Township, he was a son of the late Allen R. Bortner and Mazie Kaltreider Bortner. He was also preceded in death by his wife of nearly 69 years, Maureen M. Bortner, who died in 2021; and his five siblings, Geraldine Cosgrove, Cleo Bortner, Ardella Schuchart, Madeline Harbold, and Anna Mae Case. Laverne retired from P.H Glatfelter and was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. He was a carpenter, an avid Oriole’s fan, and enjoyed baseball, softball, and basketball.
Surviving are his five children, Jacquelyn L. Burt and her spouse, Randy, of Florida, Richard A. Bortner and his spouse, Nancy, of Florida, Laverne Scott Bortner and his spouse, Kris, of York, James L. Bortner and his spouse, Linda, of Florida, and Jina E. Lewinberg and her wife, Tanya, of Canada; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.
A memorial service to honor Laverne and Maureen will be held at 11 am on Monday, December 2, 2024 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 S. Main Street, Spring Grove, PA 17331 with the Pastor Alison Bowlan-Kurland officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. The burial of Laverne and Maureen will take place in Spring Grove Cemetery.
