L. Daniel McGonigal, 79, of Hanover, husband of Sharon Hall McGonigal, died Monday, January 2, 2017 at his home following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Dan was born on Sunday, May 30, 1937 at his grandparents house in Karthaus, Pennsylvania. He was a son of the late Lewis B. and Carrie Hertlein McGonigal. He was preceded in death by a son, Shane Daniel McGonigal; a daughter, Stephanie Anne McGonigal; and a sister, Anna Louise McGonigal. Dan graduated from Snow Shoe High School in 1955 and was very active in sports playing baseball, football and track while also managing to play trumpet in the high school band.

Dan went on to earn an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army in 1958 and then returned to Snow Shoe, Pennsylvania. He worked in the strip mines during this time and cultivated his welding skills while he also pursued his soon to be wife. He married Sharon Hall McGonigal in 1960. They soon moved to Chicago where they had their first born child in 1961 while Dan pursued a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Chicago Technical College. He was ultimately awarded his degree in mid 1962.

After college, Dan pursued work with the mechanical division of Worthington Pump where he worked for six years as a field service engineer before moving into a position with his father-in-law's salvage company. However after just four years there, Dan decided to return to the more technical engineering position at Worthington Pump where he worked another 12 years before taking his final position at Hanover Press Paving. There he had the opportunity to utilize all of the skills he had been cultivating throughout his life from welding to mechanical design, fabrication, operation and maintenance. He officially retired on January 1st, 2000.

Dan most enjoyed spending his time in the company of his family, children, and grandchildren. Dan, a provider and a caretaker, loved very deeply. When not with family, he was a master gardener and enjoyed working in the outdoors whenever possible, growing food in his gardens while continually maintaining the grounds around him.

In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by a daughter, Michelle Lynn Tasker and her husband, Michael of Hanover; two sons, Daniel Lewis McGonigal and his wife, Nadine of Hatfield and Kevin Hall McGonigal and his wife, Nickie of York; four grandsons, David Michael Tasker, Nathan Michael Tasker, Quinten Frederick McGonigal and Brody Jonathan McGonigal; one granddaughter, Michaela Grace Tasker; a sister, Betty Lou Dudish and her husband, William and a brother, Raymond “Sparky” McGonigal, all of Snow Shoe.

As per Dan's wishes, no formal services are planned.
