Joseph D. Tavares, 89, died April 16, 2010 at Mandarin Hospice House in Harwood, MD.
Born December 31, 1920 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Joseph was a son of the late Joseph and Mary Tavares. A former resident of Hanover, he resided at Atria Manresa in Annapolis, MD for the past seven years.
Mr. Tavares was a veteran of World War II, serving proudly in the United States Marine Corps, and had worked for Regal Shoe, Wall Streeter Shoe and Diamond Shoe Companies of Massachusetts and retired in 1986 as superintendent of Hanover Shoe. He was an avid golfer and long time member at the South Hills Golf Course. While in Hanover he worshipped at St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death in 2000 by his loving wife of 57 years, Muriel, and two grandchildren , Lisa Pregent and Tamara Tavares.
Survivors include four children, Joyce Kemp of Jackson TN, Carol Pregent of Vandalia, OH, Dennis Tavares of Hanover, PA and Shirley Lord of Annapolis, MD. The oldest of ten siblings, he is also survived by one brother, Angelo Tavares of Wallingford, CT and a sister Annabelle Mackey of Fairhaven, MA. He was also the proud “Pappy” of 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5055 Grandview Road, Hanover, by The Rev. Joseph F. Gotwalt. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. A Rosary will be said at 5:30 PM Monday at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover. Following the Rosary, a viewing will be held until 8:00 PM.
Serving as pallbearers will be Glenn Legal, Bill Groft, Chad Arentz, Michael Lord, Dennis Pregent, and Chris Patrick.
