Joseph W. Bierly

Joseph W. Bierly, Jr., 79, of Sun City Center, FL died on November 28, 2013 at LifePath Hospice in Ruskin, Florida.

Born in Glen Rock, he lived most of his life in Hanover. Joe attended Susquehannock High School, where he was a four letter athlete, and graduated from Gettysburg College in 1956. After graduation he signed with the Baltimore Orioles and spent one season in the minors before being drafted into the United States Army. He later earned his master’s degree at Western Maryland College and taught Physical Education and Health at South Western High School for 33 years, where he served as Athletic Director and also coached baseball and basketball. Later, he officiated basketball at both the high school and college levels. In 1998, he was inducted into the South-Central Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. In his later years, golf became an increasingly large part of his life, and he became club champion at both South Hills and Honey Run golf clubs. Joe was a member of the Men’s Club in Sun City Center.

Joe was known for his warm smile that lit up his entire face and he had a knack for making people feel good about themselves whenever he was around them. At school he was known as “SIR”, and has kept in touch with many of his students through the years. He was well loved by everyone that knew him. Joe had strong spiritual beliefs and lived his life accordingly.

Joe is survived by his forever partner, Flavia S. Robertson; three children, Donald “Tony” Cape, Holly Cape Cook, Sherry Jo Bierly; seven grandchildren- Ryan Cook, Becky Cook, Cierra Cape, Anna-Marie Trent, Eric Trent, Hannah and Sarah Forney; and a sister, Mary Rudy. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Sharon Bierly Dickie, who passed away 11 days earlier.
