John H. Vandersloot, Jr.

John H. Vandersloot, Jr., 60, of Hanover, formerly of York, entered into God’s eternal care on Friday, February 2, 2018 surrounded by his family at his home.

Born on Monday, December 9, 1957 in York, he was a son of the late John H. Vandersloot, Sr. and Helen O. Lookingbill Vandersloot. He was also preceded in death by his beloved canine companion, Benji, who he had been waiting to be reunited with. A 1976 graduate of York Vo-Tech, he served in the United States Army and had been attending the LCBC church in Hanover. John worked as a truck driver at Hermann Leasing Co. and had previously worked at different trucking companies throughout his career. He received numerous safety awards for safe driving and was also a participant in several truck fundraising convoys. He was an avid Nascar fan and collected Dale Earnhardt memorabilia.

John was passionate about being a firefighter. Throughout his life, he had held memberships and different leadership positions at Windsor Fire Company, New Bridgeville Fire Company, Craley Fire Company, and Hanover Fire Company. He was also a member of The Hanover Moose Lodge #227 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1406.

Survivors include his loving wife, Bonnie L. Livelsberger Vandersloot of Hanover; two sons, Brian K. Vandersloot and his wife, Denise, of Harrisburg and Joseph L. Roberts and his companion, Jess, of Delaware, OH; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; a sister, Susan K. “WuWu” Wynegar of York; two brothers, Alan D. Vandersloot and his wife, Joyce, and Daryl E. Vandersloot and his fiancé, Cindy, all of York; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his four legged canine companions, Morton and Brittany.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, April 20, 2018 at Panebaker Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover. Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Bridgeville Fire Company, 2870 Furnace Road, Red Lion, PA 17356.
