John Stawski, 98, of Hanover, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Hanover Hospital.
Born on Tuesday, September 14, 1915 in Elizabeth, NJ, he was a son of the late Vincent and Helena Dzierzanowska Stawski; and was also preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Geraldine V. Baker Stawski, who died in 2002; a daughter, Gloria J. Hilker, who died in 2011; and five brothers, Henry, Joe, Ted, Walter and Charles Stawski. Mr. Stawski was a life member of the Hanover Fire Company, Republican Club, Elks Lodge BPOE # 763, Loyal Order of Moose Hanover Lodge #227, VFW Post # 2506, Amvets Post #22, Hanover Home Association, and the New Oxford Social Club.
In 1981, he retired as a supervisor with Asplundh Tree Expert Company where he had worked for 45 years. While with Asplundh, he helped redesign the Chipper for better performance and efficiency. He was also the owner of the former Lincoln Manor Motel in New Oxford. Mr. Stawski served on the Shade Tree Commission for the Borough of Hanover. He collected Win Ross Trucks, was an avid New York Yankees fan and donated funds for upgrades to what is now known as the Stawski Stadium located at Moul Field in Hanover.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy E. Weaver and her husband, Leroy, of Hanover; a sister, Helen Philer of Flemington, NJ; a son-in-law, Kenneth E. Hilker of Hanover; three grandchildren, Doug Hilker, Lorie Klunk and her husband, Douglas B. and Randy Hilker and his wife, Faye A.; eight great-grandchildren, Andrew, Brent and John Hilker, Brittany Hilker Maine, Jennifer Hilker Scobbie, Danielle Klunk, Aimee Klunk Selfridge, and Lindsay Kastner; and six great-great-grandchildren, Ronan, Alexia and Brett Hilker, Brooke Conover, Adalyn Hilker, and Emmitt Maine.
The funeral will be held at 11 am Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover with The Rev. Scott A. Sager officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends at viewings to be held 6-8 pm Monday and 10-11 am Tuesday at the funeral home.
