John W. Spangler, Jr., 79, of York, husband of Janet Trone Spangler, died peacefully on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at York Hospital following a brief respiratory illness.
Born on May 31, 1933 in Hanover, he was the son of the late John W. Spangler, Sr. and Nettie Ruth Baker Spangler. A 1951 graduate of Eichelberger High School, he furthered his education at Thompson Business School. He served with the United States Air Force during the Korean War era, and was later employed by York Corrugating Co. as an accountant for 39 years before retiring in 1998. He married his wife on September 14, 1958 in Hanover and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He was a member of Locust Grove United Church of Christ for more than 40 years and more recently became a member of the First Baptist Church of York (ABC). He was also an active member of the Springettsbury Lions Club. Fascinated with the weather, he was an amateur meteorologist and enjoyed observing and predicting the forecast.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by a son, David, and daughter, Elaine, and their families. John’s five grandchildren are Adam, Joshua, Peter, Emily and Matthew.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3 pm Sunday, December 30, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of York with The Rev. Timothy J. Munson officiating. Burial will be held privately in Rest Haven Cemetery with military graveside rites being rendered by Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
