John C. Frederick, Sr., 88, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Homewood at Plum Creek.
Born on Sunday, October 14, 1928 in Manchester, MD, he was reared on a farm by his parents, Charles V. and Cora B. McCullough Frederick. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 56 years, Gloria B. Frederick, who died in 2004; sisters, Mary Frederick, Dorothy Riffle, Elizabeth Hershey and Isabelle Davidson; and a brother, Jacob Frederick. John was a 1945 graduate of Manchester (MD) High School and was also the class president that year, and later served with the US Merchant Marines. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hanover.
A former employee of the Hanover Post Office and the R.H. Sheppard Company, he was later employed by the P.H. Glatfelter Company for 36 years, until his retirement in 1992. While at Glatfelter, he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was a member of Patmos Lodge #385 F&AM, the Hanover Republican Club, Hanover Loyal Order of Moose #227, Hanover AmVets Post #22, and was a 50 year member of the Hanover Elks BPOE #763. Through his love for Hanover High School sports, he was a past president of the Hanover Sports Booster Club, and was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles, Ravens, and the former Baltimore Colts.
Survivors include three sons, John C. Frederick, Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Hanover, Grant B. Frederick and his wife, Ann, of McSherrystown, and Lance A. Frederick and his wife, Christine, of Hanover; six grandchildren, Lindsay Kelland and her husband, Eric, Jenna Burke and her husband, Kyle, Erin Wagaman and her husband, Max, Colby Clabaugh and his wife, Jessica, and Tyler and Grant Frederick; two great-grandchildren, Reese Kelland and Ciaran Clabaugh; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 11 am Friday, January 20, 2017 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church with The Rev. Dr. Daniel M. Yeiser officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends at viewings to be held from 7 to 9 pm Thursday at Panebaker Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. A Masonic service will be held at 9pm Thursday at the funeral home.
