John L. Carley

John L. Carley, 83, of Hanover, beloved husband of Elizabeth “Betty” A. (Gladysiewski) Carley, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 2, 2022 at Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community in York.

Born on Wednesday, April 26, 1939, he was a son of the late Grant E. and Mary A. (Colwell) Carley. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jo Kamas and her husband, Lawrence; and a sister-in-law, Linda Carley. John was a graduate of Clarion State College where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Education and then went on to receive his Master’s in School Administration from Westminster University. He was the Principal at South Western High School from 1975-1992 and served as the head football coach at St. Mary’s High School from 1968-1973. John also taught and coached at various schools in Pennsylvania and Ohio, and was a mentor to many. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Hanover Elks BPOE #763. John loved traveling, reading, playing golf and fishing, and was an avid fan of all Pittsburgh sports teams.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 59 years, are two children, LeeAnn Zeroth of Hanover, and John E. Carley and his wife, Desaree, of Myerstown; four grandchildren, Jacob and Joshua Zeroth, and Zachary and Braden Carley; two step grandchildren, William Stahlman and his wife, Kate, and Julie Stahlman; two great grandchildren, Stella and William Stahlman; a brother, Donald Carley of Port Allegheny; a sister-in-law, Gloria Kendra and her husband, William, of Ford City; and a brother-in-law, Edward Gladysiewski and his wife, Marilyn, of St. Marys.

A private service for the family will be held.
