Services: A memorial service to celebrate the life of Joan Bowman will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center Theater with The Rev. Douglas Smith officiating.

Joan Muriel Atkinson Bowman, 78, of Hanover, passed away at her home on January 26, 2009. Born March 1, 1930, in Reading, to the late Harold Carter Atkinson and Marguerite Smith Atkinson, she was the wife of the late William John Bowman, her husband of 49 years, who died in 2003. She was the sister of Thomas Carter Atkinson and Richard Marsh Atkinson, who preceded her in death, and a sister, Margarette Atkinson Marquette currently residing in Hamburg, PA. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.She began her music career early, training with Miriam Weiss Heisler, who directed Joan to participate in auditions sponsored by the National Guild of Music Teachers. Joan won top honors at both high school and national levels, which lead to a two year scholarship. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. Degree in Music Education and moved to Hanover. She was employed with the Hanover Public Schools as the Elementary Music Supervisor. She also taught music in the South Western and Littlestown schools as well as teaching piano privately. In 1970, she began concertizing with Mary Ann Fiery, who together were coached by the late W. David Smith. Together, they performed concerts throughout Pennsylvania.In 1992, she and Mary Ann Fiery joined with Nancy Leister and Joyce Elsner, to form Duo Times Two; where two grand pianos and eight hands delighted audiences in concerts along the East Coast. Most performances were for charitable organizations throughout the area. Mrs. Bowman actively performed with Duo Times Two until 2000.Survivors include four children, Valorie Joan Bowman of Colorado, Andrea Loucks Bowman of Hanover, William John Bowman, II and his wife Robin of Hanover, and Christian Tyrrell Bowman of Colorado.
