James F. “Jim” Harget, 76, of Hanover, devoted husband of Dolores, died peacefully surrounded by his wife and family in the home which they helped him build, on Thursday, February 11, 2016.
Born on Wednesday, December 6, 1939, in Hanover, he was a son of the late Phares and Helen Musselman Harget. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Bruce, Phares, Robert, Donald and Ken; and two sisters, Jean Tharp and Patsy Kweter. As a lifelong butcher, he was the proud owner of Harget’s Market from 1967 to 1983. He was self-employed until his retirement when he became the Hanover Market Master from 2001 to 2006. He enjoyed spending time outdoors whether he was on the golf course, on his tractor tending to his vegetable fields, or at his cabin in Perry County. Jim also loved going to Rehoboth Beach where he would golf daily and relax on the boardwalk eating funnel cakes and Thrasher’s fries. Jim was a member of St. David’s United Church of Christ.
In addition to his wife, Dee, whom he shared an inseparable 58 years of marriage, he is survived by four daughters, Cin Harget Meckley and her companion, Gus Aldinger, of Spring Grove, Lorie Wagaman and her husband, William, Sharon Brough and her husband, Andrew, all of Hanover, and Michelle Harget Slagle and her husband, John Jr., of McSherrystown; ten grandchildren, Luke and Jeremiah Meckley, Billy, Tyler and Maxwell Wagaman, Casi and Erik Brough, and Dalton, Mikauley and Madisen Slagle; a great-granddaughter, Breanna Wagaman; and two sisters, Bernice Cool of Littlestown and Mary Doyle of Thomasville.
The funeral will be held at 11 am on Monday, February 15, 2016 at St. David’s United Church of Christ, 142 Hobart Rd, Hanover with The Rev. Scott A. Sager officiating. Burial will follow in St. David’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm Sunday evening at Panebaker Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover and also from 9:45 am to 10:45 am at the church on Monday.
