James A. Baumgardner, 62, husband of Stephanie Todt Baumgardner of Hanover, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at his home following a brief battle with cancer.
Born on January 1, 1951 in Hanover, he was son of Stewart W. Baumgardner of Hanover and the late Dorothy Klunk Baumgardner Spangler. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Donald L. Baumgardner and an infant brother, Stewart Baumgardner.
A 1968 graduate of Delone Catholic High school, he later received his B.A. degree in Criminal Justice from York College. He was employed by the Hanover Police Department for over 28 years, retiring as Sergeant in 2000. He enjoyed his employment as the Safety Director for Conewago Enterprises for 12 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of the Sacred Heart Basilica.
Creative in spirit and having an eye for detail, he enjoyed the outdoors and landscaping in his yard. He spent hours entertaining on his deck, surrounded by music, family, friends and his grills.
In addition to his wife of 22 years and his father, he is survived by his son, Adam Baumgardner and his wife, Colleen of Doylestown; three grandchildren, Shea, Scarlett and Conor; a sister, Patricia Weaver of York; his stepmother, Mary Baumgardner; a sister-in-law, Deb Baumgardner, both of Hanover; three nephews and a niece.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Sacred Heart Basilica, 30 Basilica Drive, Hanover with The Rev. Lawrence J. McNeil serving as celebrant. Burial will follow in Conewago Chapel Cemetery with military graveside rites being rendered by Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
Friends may view his body from 2 to 4 pm Tuesday at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover or visit with the family from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. A prayer service being held at 8 pm.
