Eugenia “Jeanne” Buffington, 80, of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care on Friday, September 24, 2010 at Cross Keys Village—The Brethren Home Community having suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for a period of years.



Born on May 23, 1930 in Hanover, she was a daughter of the late David F. and Eugenia Koontz Glant and wife of forty years to the late William Buffington, Sr., who died in 1990.



A 1948 graduate of Eichelberger High School, she was a lifelong member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. She had been employed as a retail clerk at various stores in the Hanover area, but spent twenty years of her career caring for young children at Hanover Day Nursery before her retirement in 2000. Many will remember her as “Matilda the Witch” giving out candy from her home on York Street for many years on Halloween. “Matilda” made appearances at Hanover Day Nursery and Columbia Cottage as well.



Jeanne and her husband enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Hanover Pacers. She was also a member of YW-Wives, the AARP and served as a Penn Laurel Girl Scout Troop leader through Annuciation BVM Church. A patron of the arts, she enjoyed shows presented by the Hanover Little Theater, Hanover Community Singers and the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center.



Survivors include three sons, William Buffington, Jr. and his wife, Janet of East Berlin, John Buffington of Edgegrove and Scott Buffington and his wife, Julie of Middletown; three daughters, Gloria Smith and her husband, Paul of Glenville, Bonnie Fritz and her husband, Steve and Kelly Stultz and her husband, Leroy, all of Hanover; a sister, Louise Myers of Hanover; fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren.



The funeral will be held at 11 am Wednesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church with The Rev. Matthew B. Pensinger officiating. Burial will follow in Marburg Memorial Gardens with Nicolas and Ricky Moran, Steve Fritz, Leroy Stultz, Paul Smith, Chris Smith, Adam Smith and Ben Smith serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at a viewing from 9:45-10:45 prior to the service at the church.
