Elwood H. “Jake” Jamison, Jr., 92, of York, died Monday, August 25, 2014 at The Haven of Springwood Senior Living Community in York.
Born on Thursday, March 23, 1922 in Spring Grove, he was the son of the late Elwood H. Jamison, Sr. and Alta I. Sowers Jamison Mummert. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Bankert and a grandson, Thomas Brian Jamison. He was a 1941 graduate of Eichelberger High School and a 1943 graduate of Curtiss Wright Technical School of Aeronautics. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the First Air Commando group, 6th fighter squadron who executed the first glider invasion, 250 miles behind Japanese lines in Burma on March 5, 1944. He received the Distinguished Unit Badge, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He retired in 1987 from York Industries, where he had been employed as plant manager. He had previously held engineering positions with the former Donn Corp. Floor Systems in Red Lion and the Automatic Sprinkler Corp. in Youngstown, OH. He held life memberships with the First Air Commando Group Veterans Association, the China, Burma, India Veterans Association and the Viking Athletic Association. A man with a keen eye for photography, he was instrumental in compiling and contributing to books and documentaries about the Air Commandos.
He is survived by a son, Thomas A. Jamison and his wife, Donna of Lake St. Louis, MO; a daughter, Carole Orndorff and her husband, Robert of Hanover; two grandsons, Gregory and Mark Jamison; six great-grandchildren and a sister, Elda Wiles of Hanover.
The family will receive friends at a viewing from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover. The graveside service will be held at 11 am, Thursday, August 28, 2014 at St. Paul’s (Dubs) Church Cemetery with The Rev. David L. DeLong officiating. Military honors will be rendered by Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
