Irene H. Mandell, 93, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Hanover Hall Nursing Center.
Born on Sunday, August 26, 1923 in Osceola Mills, Clearfield County, she was a daughter of the late William and Josephine Stivetski Raftovich, and wife of the late Nicholas Mandell, her husband of 40 years, who died in 1988. The last of her generation, she was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers.
Irene and her husband owned and operated Mandell’s Green Grocery in Hanover for more than 40 years, until their retirement in 1987. She was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Church, where she volunteered with the Thrift Shop. In her younger days, Irene enjoyed sewing, working in her flower gardens and playing cards.
Survivors include her three daughters, Victoria A. Gobrecht and her husband, Terry, of Hanover, Nancy J. Kolb and her husband, Chris, of The Plains, VA, and Barbara L. Cookerly and her husband, John, of Hampton; five grandchildren, Jennifer Leib and her husband, Daniel, Jessi Tracy and her husband, Michael, and Heather, Rebecca and Matthew Cookerly; five great-grandchildren, Adam, Eric, Aidan, Evan and Ava; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private service is planned with burial in St. Vincent’s Cemetery.
