Helen Lucile Johnson Smith

Helen Lucile Johnson Smith, 88, wife of Neil Fralick Smith, Sr., of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at UPMC Hanover.

Born on Friday, August 10, 1934 in Jamestown, NY, she was the only daughter of the late Stanley A. and Lucile Gilbert Johnson. Helen was a 1952 graduate of Jamestown High School and graduated nursing school from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, OH in 1955. She worked many years at Hanover Hospital retiring in 1998. Helen was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Hanover Area Historical Society, Hanover Hospital Auxiliary, Junior Chamber of Commerce Auxiliary, and the Keystone Region Studebaker Drivers Club. She volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop, the Hanover Area Historical Society, the Hanover Hospital gift shop, and was formerly on the board of the YWCA.

Survivors in addition to her husband of nearly 65 years are five children, Patricia Berwager and her husband, Barry, Margaret Severns and her husband, Shawn, Susan Schultz and her husband, Brett, Neil Smith Jr. and his wife, Laura, and Michael Smith and his wife, Andrea; eleven grandchildren, Nick Groft, Molly Berwager, Alex Berwager and his wife, Katie, Jason Zepp and his wife, Rachael, Jeremy Zepp and his wife, Laura, Ashton Severns and his wife, Brittany, Gavan Schultz, Mari Monroy-Smith and her spouse, Kit, Ruby Smith, Ben Smith, and Penny Smith; and five great grandchildren, Keegan, Kohan, Lana, Dylan, and Mia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 11 am at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 220 Third Street, Hanover with The Rev. Joseph F. Gotwalt officiating. A viewing will take place on Friday, June 9, 2023 from 6-8 pm at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover and at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in St. Vincent Cemetery.
