Helen E. Mowrer, 91, died Friday, September 3, 2010 at Cross Keys Village – The Brethren Home Community.
Born October 30, 1918 in Franklin Co., PA, she was a daughter of the late Frank P. and Maye McLucas Jones. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John P. Mowrer, who died in 1996; a son-in-law, Dr. Ron Gearis; a brother, Eugene Jones; a sister, Louise Shrader; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Renee Mowrer.
Helen was a 1936 graduate of Mercersburg High School, and was a member of Calvary Bible Church, where she attended Sunday School. She was a cashier for 56 years having worked at the former Barnhart’s Market, Wetzel’s Market and retired from Nell’s Shurfine, and had done volunteer work at Homewood at Plum Creek since 2003. She was a member of the National AARP.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy A. Gearis of Cleveland, TN; a son, John R. Mowrer, and his wife Leona, of Hanover; one grandson, Scott Gearis of Florida; five granddaughters, Beth Giffen, and her husband Christopher, of York, Mary Sheer, and her husband Richard, of Ohio, Katy Flye, and her husband Alan, of Maine, Anne Newcomer, and her husband Seth, of Pittsburgh, Sarah Heiland, and her husband Chris, of York; five great-grandchildren, Alexander Giffen, Mark Gearis, Kes Flye, and Nathan and Rachael Heiland; one great-great-granddaughter, Abigail Gearis; and one sister, Maralee Gill of Baltimore, MD.
The funeral will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Calvary Bible Church, 603 Wilson Avenue, Hanover with The Rev. Michael Osladil officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a viewing 6-8:00 PM Tuesday at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VNA of Hanover and Spring Grove Hospice Program, 440 N. Madison Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
