Grace E. Sterner, 102, of New Oxford, entered into God's eternal care on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at Cross Keys Village—The Brethren Home Community.
Born on Friday, May 31, 1912 in York, she was a daughter of the late Bernard P. and Sarah C. Eckenrode Hemler and wife of nearly 65 years to the late Robert P. “Duke” Sterner, who died in 2012. The last of her siblings, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Francis Hemler and four sisters, Cecelia Seitz, Mary Grove, Rita Small and Catherine Luckenbaugh. She was employed at the Hanover Shoe Company for many years as a fancy stitcher and then retired in 1977 after 14 years of employment as a seamstress from J.C. Penney . She was a devoted and longtime member of the Annunciation B.V.M Church and enjoyed baking and sewing. Prior to her husband’s death, they enjoyed traveling the states along the eastern shoreline.
She is survived by her daughter, Vicki J. Keeney and her husband, William of East Berlin; her son, Michael R. Sterner and his wife, Joanne of Abbottstown; three grandchildren, Doug Docimo, Nicole Kellar and Danielle Houseal; four great-grandchildren, Taylor Docimo, Marley Kellar, and Jennifer and Sarah Dewberry and many nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Annunciation B.V.M. Church with The Rev. Lawrence W. Sherdel serving as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a viewing from 6 pm to 8 pm Monday evening at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover.
