Glenn W. Phillips, Sr., 91, of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at Hanover Hospital surrounded by his family following a brief illness.



Born on March 17, 1919 in Reading Township, Adams County, PA, he was a son of the late J. Walter and Amelia Stough Phillips and husband of 67 years to the late Mary B. Morehead Phillips, who died in 2008. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, George and Ira Phillips and a sister, Ruth Hoopert.



Mr. Phillips served with the United States Army Air Corps in Northern France and Rhineland during World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Among his ribbons and citations, he received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze stars. In 1982, he retired from PH Glatfelter Co., where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. Following his 36 years of service with the Glatfelter Co., he was employed part-time at Weis Markets for 13 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ.



An avid bowler, he was a member of the Senior Mixed League at the Hanover Bowling Center. He also enjoyed watching the Baltimore Orioles play. Being that he loved to tinker, he enjoyed taking things apart and working under the hood of a car.



Survivors include a son, Glenn W. Phillips, Jr. and his wife, Nancy; three daughters, Patsy Knaub and her husband, Paul, Barbara Reynolds and her husband, Harold, all of Hanover and Cindy Bilton and her husband, John of FL; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna Mummert of Hanover; and several nieces and nephews.



The funeral will be held 11 AM Monday, September 20, 2010 at Grace United Church of Christ with The Rev. Dr. Bruce P. Bouchard and The Rev. Richard Benner officiating. Burial will follow in New Oxford Cemetery with military graveside rites being rendered by Adams County Allied Veterans Council. Serving as pallbearers will be Gene and Larry Mummert, Shawn and Brad Fleming, Matthew Reynolds and Glenn Phillips, Jr. The family will receive friends at the viewing from 6 to 8 pm Sunday at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover.



Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Church of Christ, 100 Fourth Street, Hanover, PA 17331 or to the charity of one’s choice.
