Glenn M. Haar, 94, of New Oxford, Pennsylvania, died at The Brethren Home Community on Monday, November 19, 2012. He was the husband of Violet Rodgers Haar to whom he was married for 70 years.
He was born August 10, 1918, in Hamilton Township, Adams County, to the late George A. Haar and Lillie Lehigh Haar. He retired in 1979 from Allis Chalmers, now Voith Hydro, in York. In addition, he was a farmer in New Oxford during his life. He was a life member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Abbottstown, where he served for many years on church council. He was graduated from New Oxford High School and later served for 24 years on the New Oxford Area School Board as well as the Adams County School Authority Board. He was a member of the Hebron Lodge #465 of the Freemasonry and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter #2506. He served for 4 years and 7 months during World War II in the United States Army, Quartermaster Corp, and in Italy with the 10th Mountain Infantry.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Shelby Haar Zaner and her husband, Dr. John A. Zaner, Gorham, Maine; Patricia J. Kelley and her husband, Scott L. Kelley, York, Pennsylvania; four granddaughters, Dr. Rebecca Zaner and her husband, Hygenes Garcia, Glendale, Arizona; Amanda Kelley Gilbert and her husband, Richard Gilbert, Richmond, Virginia; Suzanne Zaner and her partner, Salissa Wahlers, Burlington, Vermont; Dr. Lauren Kelley Smith and her husband, Darren A. Smith, York, Pennsylvania; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Glenn Gilbert. He is also survived by two siblings, G. Marion Haar and Blanche Staub.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 24, at 3:00 p.m. at St. John‘s Lutheran Church with The Rev. Shawn M. Berkebile officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
