George Elwood Miller

George Elwood Miller, 92, of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Homewood at Plum Creek following a period of declining health.
Born on Friday, June 1, 1923 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Charles S. and Mary Epley Miller, and husband of the late Dorothy Penner Miller, who died in 2010. He was also preceded in death by eleven brothers and sisters, a great-great-grandson, Uriah Gonzalez and his previous wife and mother of his children, Treva C. Harner Miller, who died in 1999.
George served with the United States Army, as a combat engineer, during World War II. He was self-employed as a painter and wallpaper hanger for many years in the Hanover area before retiring in 1982. He was a talented musician, a one man band of sorts, who played instruments ranging from the harmonica to the bejeweled guitar to the accordion. Skilled with his hands and having an attention to detail, he enjoyed assembling model cars and giving them away as gifts. He enjoyed the game of Checkers and had a smile that was contagious. He had a compassionate heart; he picked up hitchhikers and was a great witness for Jesus Christ.
Survivors include one son, Leroy Miller and his wife, Carol, of Jacksonville, FL; five daughters, Mary Frey of Hanover, Jean Rickrode and her husband, Larry, of East Berlin, Sue Fix and her husband, Dean, of York, Lucy Wherley and her husband, Dan, of New Oxford, and Georgia Snyder and her husband, Ed, of Hanover; 16 grandchildren; 27great-grandchildren with one to be born; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Elsie Luckenbaugh of Hanover; a brother, William Miller of Littlestown and a large extended family of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 11 am Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Panebaker Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover with The Rev. Larry Rickrode officiating. Burial will follow in Marburg Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites being rendered by Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
