Services: The funeral will be held at 11 am Thursday, May 28, 2009 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with The Rev. Kirk Griffin officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s (Dubs) Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery with military graveside rites being rendered by Hanover Allied Veteran’s Honor Guard. Grandsons serving as pallbearers include David Kurtz, Jr., Michael Forbes, Daniel Kurtz, Brian McDermitt, Christopher Miller and Thomas Rutledge, III.
Visitation: The viewing will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and also one hour prior to the service at the church.
George Richard McDermitt, Sr., 87, of Hanover, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family surrounding him on Friday, May 22, 2009 following a short illness. He was the loving and devoted husband of Edith Ellen (Noel) McDermitt.Born on May 5, 1922 in New Oxford, PA, he was the first child of the late Hugh Ignatius and Ozella Belle (Carl) McDermitt. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Carl H. McDermitt, a granddaughter Lacee Q. Miller and a grandson, Robert P. Rice. He graduated at 16 years of age in 1938 from York Springs High School and served as President of his class. He proudly served his country during World War II with the United States Army Air Corps. As a member of the 13th Jungle Air Force, 72nd Bomb Squadron, he served on B-24 airplanes. He was involved in battles and bombing missions in China, the liberation of the South Philippines, Western South Pacific and Borneo campaigns. He was awarded the American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with three bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star, Victory Medal, and the Air Medal for his contribution to victory and peace through meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flights in the Pacific area. His love of carpentry and natural talent for building led to a partnership with his brother, G & C McDermitt, Inc., which in addition to homes, constructed bowling alleys throughout the East Coast that included the bowling alleys in the Pentagon and Camp David. He was also the owner and proprietor of many bowling centers. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Carpenters Local #191 for 71 years and a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for 68 years. He was a man of dignity, respect, and honor, taking the time throughout his life to befriend and quietly help those in need. His smile and quiet ways made him a cherished friend to many. He had a special love for each of his children and grandchildren—their dreams and needs were always a priority.In addition to his cherished wife of almost 68 years, he is survived by four daughters, Suzanne V. Kurtz and her husband, Dave of Glenville, Joan L. Miller, Edith E. Springfloat, and Carol O. McDermitt; a son, George R. McDermitt, Jr. and his wife, Joyce, all of Hanover; a sister, J. Marie Jones of Carlisle; 21 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren with another great-great-grandchild due in July; and many nieces and nephews.
